Early Bird Events

 

7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012 – Student Poetry Winners announced and poems read, prizes awarded, followed by an evening devoted to Open Mic Poetry Reading:  This is a social hour for everyone desiring to read his or her own poetry – so more people will have an opportunity to flaunt their poetic wares.  This is always an enjoyable prelude and everyone is welcome.

 

Friday, March 30, 10:00-4:00 at Zion National Park:  Although not a part of Redrock Writers Seminar, we suggest that you also register for Poetry In the Park (PIP).  (Please see the article below.)  Our partner, Poetry In the Park, is sponsored by Utah State Poetry Society and Zion Canyon Field Institute, and requires a separate registration.

7:00 Friday Evening Program:  Our four distinguished faculty members will give a brief overview of Saturday’s presentations. 

 

8:00 Friday Evening Program:  Winning Entries in Chaparral Poetry Forum, our national poetry contest, are announced a read.  Chapbooks are provided to all registrants.

 

Both Friday Evening programs are open to the public.

Merry Palmer

 

Essay Writing – fiction

 

Merry Palmer has taught English for many years at College of Eastern Utah, San Juan Center, Blanding.  She has won the essay category of the Utah Arts Council contest and is a poet, novelist, and inspiring teacher.

 

Budd Powell Mahan

 

An inspiring poet, author, teacher, a powerful voice for poetry, Budd served as the 26th president of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies and as 16th and 19th president of the Poetry Society of Texas.  Hewon the Eakin Manuscript Competition in November 2005 with his book, Falling To Earth, and the Stevens Manuscript Competition of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, Inc. in 2006 with his book, Harvest.  His book, Witness, won the 2010 Morris Memorial Chapbook Contest.

Doug Alder is co-chair of the St. George Book Festival, past president of the Dixie State College (1986-2009), noted author with many publications.

 

Judy Johns

 

Judy Johns, prize winning author, and 2003 Utah State Poetry Society Poet of the Year, author of If I Could Speak in Silk, is a Professor of English at Weber State College, Ogden, Utah where she teaches Creative Writing and Poetry.

 

 

 

POETRY IN THE PARK, ZION NATIONAL PARK, MARCH 30, 2012

Extending your Redrock Writers Seminar experience! Utah State Poetry Society partners with Zion Canyon Field Institute and Redrock Writers Guild to present the Third Annual Poetry In the Park, Friday, March 30, 2012, preceding the Writers Seminar.

March 30, 2012, 10:00-4:00 Poetry In the Park Presents Guest Poet Budd Powell Mahan.

Poetry In the Park's $60 registration fee includes a relaxed day in one of the most beautiful settings in the world--with readings by Budd Powell Mahan, a guided nature walk, afternoon poetry workshops with writing time, and time for sharing of registrants' poetry. (Bring your own brown bag lunch.) We meet from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to allow us time for dinner on our own, and to join the Redrock Writers Seminar at 7:00 p.m. for the Faculty Program and 8:00 P.M. Chaparral Poetry Prize Program at the Pioneer Opera House in St. George. Please join us, and enjoy a memorable day with some great poets.
